Giovanni Segantini

By the age of eight, Giovanni Battista Emanuele Maria Segatini (who changed his last name to Segantini in 1879), was orphaned and subsequently lived in institutions and with family members in Milan. The early death of his mother in particular preoccupied him throughout his life, and the subject of motherly care would become a recurrent theme in his oeuvre.
